Safety and community rules

Raw is for people 13 and over, and teens use it. These are the protections built into the app, the rules everyone plays by, and how to tell us when something's wrong.

Version 1.0. Last updated .

Who Raw is for

  • Raw is for people 13 and over. There's no route in for younger children, through a school or otherwise.
  • The app asks for a birth year before it asks for an email. If the year means someone could be under 13, Raw stops there, deletes what was entered, and collects no email.
  • Only the birth year is stored, never a full date of birth, and nobody else sees it.
  • If you think a child under 13 has an account, email hello@1percentlabs.com and we'll delete it.

Teens: 13 to 17

Players 13 to 17 are private by default, and these rules are enforced by the server, not just the screens:

  • No public profile. Friends they've added see their display name and streak; league mates and battle opponents see only the display name and points or rating.
  • Battles, quick match and friend challenges alike, only with players in their own age group.
  • Their own leagues: 13 to 17s and adults never share a league.
  • Duels only with friends in their own age group, and only players in that age group vote on them.
  • Friends across ages are possible only by sharing an invite code or link. Nobody can find anyone by searching.

Raw knows only a birth year, so it reads it the careful way: a player moves to the adult groups on the 1 January after they turn 18, automatically.

No messages, by design

  • There are no direct messages, no chat and no comments.
  • In battles, players can send only preset reactions, such as "gg" and "nice". Nudges to friends are presets too.
  • There's no member directory and no search. Players appear by display name only.
  • Duel voters see the two answers, never who wrote them.

Ghost opponents

When nobody near your level is around for a battle, a ghost plays you: a practice opponent played by Raw, at your level. Ghosts are always labelled as ghosts. A ghost battle earns XP but never changes your battle rating.

Community rules

These apply to everything you write or send in Raw: display names, written answers, duel answers and reports.

  • Keep personal details out. No names of real people, addresses, schools, phone numbers, emails, social handles or links, yours or anyone else's.
  • Be kind. No hate, bullying, harassment or mocking people for who they are.
  • Keep it clean. No sexual content, and nothing that sexualises anyone.
  • No threats or harm. Nothing violent, threatening, or encouraging self-harm.
  • Nothing illegal, and no spam or advertising.
  • Be you. Don't pretend to be someone else, and play fairly: no AI, no cheating (see the terms).

How answers are checked

Duel answers are the only writing other players ever see, so they're checked before anyone sees them:

  • An automatic check looks for contact details (emails, phone numbers, web addresses, social handles, "add me on" and the like), long runs of digits, and harmful words and phrases.
  • An answer it flags is held, and the duel waits, until a person on our team reviews it.
  • Anything that wasn't checked is held too, so nothing unchecked is ever shown.

Reporting

  • A duel answer: while voting, use the report button on the answer and pick a reason (personal info, unkind, unsafe, or other). One report hides it until our staff look.
  • A question: from the result screen, report it as wrong, unclear, offensive or other, with a note if you like.
  • Anything else, including a display name or a worry about another player: email hello@1percentlabs.com. Tell us the display name, what happened and roughly when.

What happens after a report

  • A person on our team reviews it. The person reported is never told who reported them.
  • We can clear the content, remove it, or remove it and warn the writer. Serious or repeated breaks can lead to an account being suspended or closed.
  • Every staff decision is logged, so decisions can be checked later.

If someone is in danger

If you or someone else is in immediate danger, call your local emergency number. Raw can't send help. If you're thinking about harming yourself, please talk to someone now: in the US, call or text 988; in the UK and Ireland, call Samaritans on 116 123; elsewhere, your local emergency number can connect you.

To tell us about something serious on Raw, email hello@1percentlabs.com and put "Urgent" in the subject.

Parents and guardians

  • Raw collects an email, a display name, a birth year and what your teen does in the app. It shows no ads and sells no data. The privacy policy has the details.
  • Your teen can delete their account in the app at any time (You, then Settings, then Delete account).
  • You can email hello@1percentlabs.com about your teen's account, including to have it deleted. We'll confirm the account first, for example with a code sent to its email address.
